emergency exit sign inspections & exit light inspections

Emergency exit sign inspections should be a regular part of your routine maintenance. The NFPA requires a monthly inspection of all emergency & exit lighting systems. As you will want to be sure your building is compliant with the most up-to-date regulations, you can be assured that 3 Alarm Fire & Safety will have you current on all necessary emergency exit sign placement and will inspect all emergency exit signs to be sure they are in proper working order before an emergency strikes! 


Backup ighting in an emergency will guide the way to safety which is why it's important to have regularly scheduled times for inspecition & testing. Low Pressure Cylinder Hydro-Testing

HYDROTESTING - (Low Pressure Cylinders) - Commonly referred to as Cylinder Proof Pressure Testing. This test is evidenced by a hydrotest label on the back of the extinguisher with the pressure and date tested. This test re-qualifies the cylinder for twelve more years of use. The cylinder is emptied of agent, filled with water and pressurized to a listed pressure to see if the threads fail or the cylinder 'rips'. The cylinder is then dried, refilled with extinguisher agent to the manufacturer listed weight, maintenance performed on the head, recharged, and certified. Hydro-testing is conducted each five years for vehicle or powered industrial trucks; whereas, facility extinguishers receive this each twelve years.


High Pressure Cylinder Hydro-Testing


HYDROTESTING - (High Pressure Cylinders) - Performed on Carbon Dioxide fire extinguishers, wheeled fire extinguishers with either carbon dioxide or nitrogen cylinders as expellants. Medical Oxygen Cylinders, welding cylinders, propane tanks, etc also receive this sort of testing. The test is evidenced by a metal stamp into the shoulder of the cylinder which includes the Department of Transportation (DOT) Retester Identification Number (RIN) and the month/Year tested.

Regulations from OSHA stating danger to employees must be minimized:


Lighting and marking must be adequate and appropriate

Each exit route must be adequately lighted so that an employee with normal vision can see along the exit route. 

Each exit must be clearly visible and marked by a sign reading "Exit."

Each exit route door must be free of decorations or signs that obscure the visibility of the exit route door. 

If the direction of travel to the exit or exit discharge is not immediately apparent, signs must be posted along the exit access indicating the direction of travel to the nearest exit and exit discharge. Additionally, the line-of-sight to an exit sign must clearly be visible at all times. 

Each doorway or passage along an exit access that could be mistaken for an exit must be marked "Not an Exit" or similar designation, or be identified by a sign indicating its actual use (e.g., closet).

Each exit sign must be illuminated to a surface value of at least five foot-candles (54 lux) by a reliable light source and be distinctive in color. Self-luminous or electroluminescent signs that have a minimum luminance surface value of at least .06 footlamberts (0.21 cd/m2) are permitted. 

Each exit sign must have the word "Exit" in plainly legible letters not less than six inches (15.2 cm) high, with the principal strokes of the letters in the word "Exit" not less than three-fourths of an inch (1.9 cm) wide.
